When should your child get his/her first eye exam?
The visual system undergoes developmental changes during the first years of life. Diagnosis and treatments of visual problems caught early on can improve cognitive, motor and social skills. A child's first eye exam is ideally at six months of age.
Children must have an eye exam before entering kindergarten. The National Eye Institute indicates that visual impairment in children is associated with development delays and the need for special educational, vocational, and social services into adulthood.
A dilated comprehensive eye exam thoroughly inspects the health of your eyes. It also enables the doctor to check the optic nerves located at the back of the eye. Eye diseases that do not have early warning signs may be detected through a dilated eye exam.
